“Chris.. why do  we have a tree inside?”
“Remember I told you about winterfest?”
“Hmh..yes?”
“Well, it’s customary to have and decorate a tree for that:”
“Oh..”

Chris motioned for Hayle to come help him, taking out boxes of different colored ornaments and other decorations. He noticed how he seemed hesitant at first, but after a couple chuckles from Chris when he tried to toss the ornaments on the tree, he seemed to ease into it.

“I think it looks good.”
“So.. what’s next?”
“We plug in the lights, and put presents under the tree.”
“Presents?”
“Yes.”

He saw the change in Hayle he had come to learn happened when he was uncertain or uncomfortable with something.

“What?”
“Isn’t winterfest a religious holiday?”
“It is, why?”
“Isn’t it wrong for me to.. well participate, I mean, I don’t believe in that religion?”
“Many don’t, but many still choose to celebrate this holiday, because well, what is wrong with good food, company of family and friends. Not to forget the giving gifts to people you love?”

Hayle seemed to ponder for a bit before nodding.

“But I don’t have a gift for you.”
“You’ll think of something, and it’s not mandatory. Just having you here is gift enough for me.”

Chris pulled Hayle over to the kitchen. He had invited Nat and some other friends over for dinner later, wanting to show Hayle how this holiday could be celebrated.

“So.. what do you want for dinner?”
“Pizza?”
“Really?”
“Yes.. because it leaves time for, other things.”

The look his husband gave him told him all he needed to know, but he wasn’t going to order pizza afterwards.
