As everyone sits down around the table, they get to the most talked about thing in the household, the meal.

“Hmm… I need to make your food cold, Hay hay. You can’t eat it warm.”

He takes a plate and serves it with food for Hayden, staring at it as he tries to remember the chilio spell the spellcasters use at RoM, which makes River lift an eyebrow, pretty sure he knows the spell Vy is trying to cast but also knowing that is not a spell he should really know. Vy finally makes a series of small words that sound odd, hands shining and the food on the plate goes cold.

“Oh! I did it!”

He giggles and serves Hayden the cold lasagna.

“Okay! Everyone dig in!”

River looks at Vy a little, surprised he could do the spell, then just shakes his head, and gets food for him and Rylan, as Chris get’s some for him and his husband, and for a little while they all go quiet, just enjoying the homemade meal.

“I don’t think you’re supposed to know that, are you?”

River is watching Vy with curiosity, while he eats.

“No, but the sages don’t know that”

He makes a shush movement with his finger and smiles.

“Smells tasty, I did it like I remember the recipe. I guess it tastes good too since we were all quiet for so long.
“Okay, I admit, if I am to die of food poisoning, it’s not a bad way to go.”

River chuckles, eating the bread, actually quite enjoying the recipe that Vy has used, and generally, the food is as he said tasty.

“Yeah, no offense to all those places you normally get us food dad, but this was better.”

Vy starts glowing blue, confident with his skills and very happy he was praised for his cooking, perhaps even more so when he notices that Hayden who normally eats the slowest is the first to finish his food.

“Do you want me to serve you more Hay hay? It’s getting colder now, so you can eat it without me needing to cool it down! And cheese bread, do you want any?”

“Cheese bread sounds nice, and no thanks, I think I had enough of the lasagna for now at least. These are some possible leftovers my dad is not giving away.”
“Well, it’s all perfect. I think I need to take out my hat to you, Vy. Well done!”
“High praise there Vy, from the one who feared food poisoning.”

Rylan chuckles as Vy cuts a piece of the cheese bread for Hayden and one for himself. River laughing at Rylan’s comment.

“Well, someone has to know how to cook. I might end up dead from food poisoning from you, the frog must learn how to become a tiny chef if he wants to not starve to death!”
“So what you are saying is that my frog will turn into a rat?”
“Okay, when you are done, you kids can head to the living room, and me and my husband can do the cleanup, we’ll join you when we’re done.”

Well, this frog-rat prince is full… “

River smiles at Rylan and gets up, pulling Rylan behind him.

“Let’s go lounge a little then.”

He gently wraps an arm around Rylan’s waist, giving him a quick kiss, Rylan kissing him back and pulling him over to one of the sofa’s in the living room, “pushing” River into it, before curling up against him just closing his eyes and just for a split second or two, he feels like he could fall asleep in his arms. River just playing with his hair, mouthing a silent “my princess.” smiling at him.  Hayden takes Vy with him, stopping just to pull him close and kiss him once before he sits down on the sofa, pulling Vy to him so he can relax if he wants. Vy chirps content, giving Hayden a kiss and playing with his hoodie.

“I’m happy you all enjoyed the food. Oh. Do you want a book to read, Hay hay?”

Hmh, sure.”

Vy gets up, disappearing for a few minutes to find the books and then comes back, holding out a book to Hayden.

“Oh! I found a new book! It’s named what we can learn with cats.I thought someone would like seeing you reading this”.

He giggles and sits next to Hayden, snuggling close to him, an astronomy compendium tucked in his lap, as Hayden looks at the book, Felix decides to jump up and lie down next to him.

“I think we can learn plenty from cats, right Felix?“
“Mrow.”

River watches the two of them, leaning back, enjoying the moment of quiet, even if he has a foreboding feeling lingering in the back of his mind.

Vy peacefully reading about star formation and birth, idly petting Felix and keeping close to Hayden, River looking down at Rylan and kisses his hand.

“so. How you feeling princess? Full and happy? I was promised bad singing.”

He chuckles, playfully as Chris and Hayle enter the room, after having just watched them for a little while, not quite wanting to disturb the moment.

“Well, I can’t promise bad singing, but I do bring guitars.”
“Oh, Vy, would you get my Christmas present from my room?”
“Yes!”

Vy gets up and heads back up to get the box, River just looking at Rylan who smiles at him as he sits himself up, still leaning on him.

“Here comes the singing. I’d say goodbye eardrums. But you could be talking shit and I’d still love the sound of it because it’s you.”
“Luckily for your eardrums, I mostly hum along.”

“Well, I can’t wait to hear you hum.”
“You might regret that too really, so will the frog sing or hum?
“I’ll hum with you. Don’t want to ruin it for the actually good singers in the house.”

Hayden sits up as Vy goes to get the picks, putting the book om the table scratching Felix behind the ear. Chris sits down next to him handing him his guitar. Vy coming back with the box handing it to Hayden and sitting next to him, just eager to hear him play, laying his head against Hayden’s shoulder, feeling him a bit and giving him a little smile.

“Do you feel tired, my Heartlight?”
“Thanks, and a little, but I’m still good.”

He smiles as he opens the box, still fascinated with how pretty it is, and of course how special the stuff inside is as well.

“You might want to sit with Hayle though, that way you can see us all the time.”
“So, what song do we start with, the usual?”
“Yeah, I like Silent Night.”

He turns and pulls Vy into a kiss, before he takes out one of the picks, checking that the sound is right. Vy looking at him with a bit of worry and nods, quickly moving to sit next to Hayle, so he can hear this "silent night” song. Chris smiles at his son, as they start to play, his tune just a little under the one Hayden uses, and as the start to sing, they mirror that in their song as well.

“Worried?”

Hayle speaks low, just so Vy can hear him, while still not disturbing those that play.

“I just wanted to thank you, for well, all this, not just the food, but for my son having his first Christmas where he gets to enjoy both days, not just one.. or none.”

Vy looks at Hayle surprised and blushes a little, fidgeting with his fingers as the words sink in. ‘having his first Christmas’? This meant there had been a long time since Hayden had had a chance to enjoy this, he’d be sick. And Vy was aware Hayden was always so often sick, before he moved here, before he found out what was going on, there’d be periods of time in school where he wouldn’t see Hayden around school or around the library. He never made any of that before he knew he was sick. He looked at Hayden and smiled a little, then he looks back at Hayle and smiles, whispering.

“If I can, I will always do everything in my power to make Hayden be well. Everything!”
“Just remember yourself too, okay?”

Hayle smiles, putting a hand on Vy’s shoulder as the two swaps from silent night to Oh holy night, which is Hayle’s favorite.

“It’s easy to forget yourself when you have a sick loved one, so promise me to take care of you too.”
“I will.

Vy smiles and hugs knees, pulling his feet to the sofa, just watching the two play, starts humming to the song, his humming coming out with some melodic chirps in between. Rylan smiling as his brother and dad start singing, the song one that always made him relax somehow, humming along much like before not hitting a single note along the way, his thumbs caressing River’s hands. River smiles, not really paying much attention to the music, just enjoying Rylan’s humming, the sound of his voice, how relaxed he is against him. He closes his eyes and whispers.

“I think they’re singing wrong… They’re singing nothing like you. They’re clearly wrong.”

Rylan blushes as he hears River’s words, humming along to the new song mostly wanting to stop time and stay alike this much like he had wished for earlier in the day. turning his head, whispering back.

“I agree, they’re clearly singing it wrong…

River chuckles and kisses his cheek again gently and lays head on his shoulder once more, quite enjoying this, being this close to Rylan, the music, the warm cozy family feeling, wishing much like Rylan, that it would never have to end.
