The first weeks after he had ended the dreams he had been so busy he hadn’t even had the time to ask his uncle if Rylan had come around, but when he finally had some time, he found his uncle and received an mp3 player which made him smile. It was, however, the last one he received. He went back to his uncle every week, but he was only answered with a shake off the head, and the occasional. “I’m sorry, nothing.” He worried, had Rylan given up or…. Had he made him so weak and sick that he couldn’t get here? He didn’t have much time to think about it, but it still buried itself in the back of his mind, and as time went on, and there still was no news, the worry that Rylan had given up and moved on became greater.

“You are ready.”
“What.”
“You are ready to go back, and to start your role as guardian of a family of dragons.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”

Morgyn looked at him, taking off the collar he had once put on him, before taking him before the council where everything became very official. Morgyn stayed his master, but he was now free to go where he wanted, and with a task from them to guard the dragons in the Ward family from the hunters who were still around.

“Hunters were spotted close to the portal the other day, spying on Yvreon, your first task will be to find them and make sure they do no harm. When that is done, you come back to me, tell me how it went and then you are free to do what you want, as long as protecting them is your priority.”

He nodded, he was oddly nervous, not because off the hunters, but to return. Had he moved on, would he even want to talk to him? He shook his head as he walked through the portal he had come through over three years ago. So much had changed, he had changed, he was sure they had changed too. A random thought of Hayle eating him alive came to mind as he passed through the portal, his senses kicking in as he headed out to find the hunters first, then came the hard part.

“HAYDEN!”

The door to Hayden’s bedroom flew open as Yvreon stumbled in, waking Hayden from his sleep with a jolt that sent pain coursing through his body.

“What?”
“Sorry… I… I saw River!!”

Hayden sighed, looking a little confused at Yvreon as he had seen River plenty of times in RoM in the time he had spent there.

“And?”
“Oh! Outside the portal! Not in RoM, but here!!”
“Really?”
“Yes!”
“Where did he go?”
“I don’t know… I went here.”

Hayden sat quietly for a while, not quite sure what to do with the information. Part of him wanted to call his brother who was still at school, the other wasn’t so sure that was a good idea. What if it was just a short visit, and then everything would be back to the way it was. He didn’t want to give him hope if there weren’t any.

“He didn’t have the collar… I noticed that.”
“I guess, we better just wait and see.”
“Not tell Rylan?”

Vy looked at him confused, he thought Hayden would jump at the chance to tell Rylan this news so when he once again shook his head, he sat down on the side of the bed just looking at him.

“What if we tell him, and he isn’t back, and this is just a random visit at the bidding of his master?”

“Oh…Oooooh… yes.”

He felt Hayden’s warm hand on his cheek as he started glowing blue, he hadn’t even considered that it might not be that he was back, and what telling Rylan might do to him.

“Want to read some then?”
“Sure.”

It had become a thing they did when Vy came back, they read for a bit and when Hayden was too tired, Vy would do his homework and just watch over him when he slept. At the same time as they had their talk, River had done what he was sent to do. He had found the small team of hunters and made sure they could do no harm. He had also taken their familiars who he knew he would need to find new homes for. But first, he wanted to go somewhere, and if he was lucky, he would be there too. He made his way through the familiar landscape, checking on the familiars, already having a home in mind for one of them.

“What the….”

The building that stood in front of him looked nothing like what he had expected, it was clear that it had been empty quite a while too. He walked around it, looking at the entrance, that had a note on it still, a postbox and his name was the only thing standing on it. He sank down on the stairs, why hadn’t Rylan mentioned this, had it not happened before their last meeting, but by the date on the note, it had happened before then… why would he not mention it…? He sighed, the familiar feeling he had noticed several times lately, the feeling of being abandoned, a feeling not even those mp3 players could stop no matter how many times he had listened to them. Had they all given up on him?

“Okay, I’ll go by on my way home.”

It had been his brother that had called him, asking if he wouldn’t mind stopping by the café and grab a cake on his way home from school. He didn’t mind, he had the time as there was no photoshoot today. Having stopped by and gotten the cake, he decided to take the route by the shelter on the way back. He did that sometimes, just to remember what it had once been like. It worried him a little though, it was starting to deteriorate a lot, and if no one bought it, it would start to crumble. As he got to it, he stopped by the fence, just standing there for a bit, remembering all the good times they had there when they took the stinkes out to try and train them, but most of all, he remembered River. He sighed, pushing off the fence he was leaning on when he saw someone move, stepping out from the side of the shelter clearly looking at him. Could it really be though, was this just some apparition his tired mind willed into existence he honestly couldn’t tell and it scared the hell out of him?

River blinks repeatedly, wondering if it’s an apparition, maybe a sick form of his master torturing him one last time. Yet, it was Rylan, he was standing right there in front of him. For all the times he had dreamt and thought about this moment he now stood completely unaware of what to do, so, slowly, he stepped forward

“Rylan?”
